History Unveiled: A Journey Through Time

Settlers first arrived along the Arkansas River in 1878, and Garden City was incorporated in 1883, the same year Finney County was established and named for Lieutenant Governor David W. Finney. The railroad and irrigated agriculture drove early growth, and the surrounding plains became productive farm and ranch country.

From Frontier Town to Regional Center

Charles "Buffalo" Jones, an early founder and well-known bison conservationist, helped put Garden City on the map. The area's sugar beet and cattle industries shaped its identity for decades, and that agricultural heritage still runs through local culture today.

The defining modern change came in 1980, when Iowa Beef Processors, now Tyson Fresh Meats, opened one of the world's largest beef plants nearby. The plant transformed Garden City into a fast-growing regional center and drew workers from around the world, giving the community its international character.
