Ochsner Health is the leading nonprofit healthcare provider in the Gulf South and one of the largest non-university academic medical centers in the country. The system is anchored by Ochsner Medical Center on Jefferson Highway in New Orleans, a System III vertically integrated network with more than 27,000 employees. Pediatric anesthesia is based at the flagship New Orleans campus and its affiliated pediatric and neonatal facilities.

Pediatric Facilities

Ochsner Children’s is the region’s leading integrated provider of multispecialty pediatric care, with a full range of complex specialty services including congenital heart surgery, cardiac transplantation, and liver and bone marrow transplantation.

Surgical Capacity

  • Anesthesia starts at 53 locations at the Jefferson Highway campus each day
  • Approximately 8 to 9 of those are pediatric specialty rooms
  • Coverage of one room at a time at the Baptist campus; no more than two rooms at Jefferson Highway
  • Pediatric imaging under anesthesia includes roughly five MRIs per day and three to five CTs per week

Trauma Designation

The New Orleans campus does not currently carry a pediatric trauma designation. A Level II pediatric trauma rating is anticipated following the opening of the new Children’s Hospital.

New Children’s Hospital

Ochsner is building a new, comprehensive, dedicated Children’s Hospital on its main New Orleans campus, with an expected opening in 2028. When it opens, pediatric anesthesia will function as its own department. The new facility will include a specialized pediatric endoscopy suite and additional procedure rooms near the operating rooms.

Academic Environment

  • ACGME-accredited pediatric residency program
  • Teaching of medical students from Tulane University and the University of Queensland
  • Academic appointments available through Xavier School of Medicine
  • A Pediatric Anesthesia Fellowship is in development, which would be the only such program in Louisiana
