Procedural Emphasis & Clinical Structure

The gastroenterology position at Mercy GI Clinic is an excellent opportunity for a physician seeking a procedure-driven practice with minimal clinic duties. The role is structured to ensure providers spend the majority of their time performing diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic procedures, while maintaining meaningful patient interactions for pre- and post-procedural care.

Procedural Focus

A significant portion of the schedule is dedicated to high-volume procedures, including:

  • Esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) – Diagnosing and treating upper GI disorders like GERD, ulcers, and Barrett’s esophagus.
  • Colonoscopy – Emphasizing colorectal cancer screening, polyp removal, and IBD management.
  • Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) – Available for trained providers, with strong demand and institutional backing.
  • Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS) – Growth potential for those with expertise in this advanced subspecialty.
  • Capsule Endoscopy & Breath Testing – Supporting diagnosis of small bowel disorders and motility studies.

The endoscopy suite features state-of-the-art Olympus and Pentax scopes and is supported by a dedicated CRNA team, with four procedural rooms operating Monday through Friday based on anesthesia availability.

Patient Care & Coordination

Though clinic time is limited, the physician will be involved in:

  • Pre-procedure consultations – Assessing suitability, explaining risks, and optimizing plans.
  • Post-procedure follow-ups – Reviewing pathology, ensuring recovery, and coordinating ongoing care.
  • Management of complex GI cases – Especially referrals based on provider subspecialty strengths.
  • Collaborative care coordination – Working closely with referring PCPs, surgeons, and oncologists for comprehensive patient management.

Call Responsibilities & Inpatient Coverage

  • 1-in-3 shared call rotation
  • On-call duties include:
    • Consultations for GI bleeds, food impactions, and pancreatitis
    • Urgent inpatient endoscopies
    • Coordination with hospitalists and ED physicians

The transition to a 1-in-3 model supports sustainable work-life balance while maintaining access to urgent GI services.

Opportunities for Expansion & Growth

Mercy GI Clinic is committed to expanding procedural offerings and encourages physicians to develop new services aligned with their expertise. There is high patient demand for ERCP and EUS, and hospital leadership is open to investing in new equipment and technologies as needed.

Physicians are also invited to contribute to innovation, clinical trials, and program development, ensuring that the practice continues to grow and evolve with the needs of the community.

This role is ideal for a motivated gastroenterologist seeking high procedural volume, collegial teamwork, and long-term career advancement within a respected healthcare system.
