At MedStar St. Mary's Hospital, we see anywhere from 90–150 deliveries per month. We currently have 4 full-time OBGYNs on staff and, due to community need, we will be adding an additional OBGYN to the practice. There are no family physicians doing obstetrics at our hospital. Our team also includes 5 Midwives and 5 Nurse Practitioners.
The Nurse Practitioners work in the clinic only, managing both OB and GYN patients, primarily assigned to lower-risk cases. Our practice is evenly split—about 50% OB and 50% GYN—with roughly 30% of OB patients considered high-risk. The hospital maintains a C-section rate of approximately 12%.
We have a Level 1 nursery and do not manage pregnancies under 35 weeks gestation. Cases under 35 weeks are transferred to other MedStar hospitals closer to DC. We also partner with a Maternal Fetal Medicine practice located in Brandywine, approximately 35 miles north, for consults.
Our team includes 2 RNs who manage triage, and we are currently recruiting a third. Midwives are on-site Monday through Friday, 7am to 7pm, handling low-risk vaginal deliveries during weekdays.
Each OBGYN takes call 6 days per month. Our rotation includes Dr. Joyce Neal, a solo practitioner in the community who remains in the schedule as we grow the team. The call is 24-hour coverage of one hospital. On-call duties include managing all deliveries and emergent procedures, with the following day off for recovery.
There are no Laborists; the hospital is covered by the on-call OBGYN with support from a Certified Nurse Midwife during most shifts. Additional call days are compensated and will be negotiated in your contract.
