Position Overview

Understanding the Role

The OHSU Department of Diagnostic Radiology is hiring a board-certified general diagnostic radiologist for OHSU Health Hillsboro Medical Center (HMC) in Hillsboro, Oregon, about 30 minutes west of downtown Portland. You'll join a hospital-based group that operates like a private practice, with the salary, retirement plan, and benefits of Oregon's only public academic health center.

The schedule is hybrid. You'll split your time between onsite and remote shifts, share weekend call with the group, and typically work three or four days a week.

Why the Position Is Open

HMC imaging volume grew from about 68,000 studies in 2019 to 109,000 in the most recent fiscal year, an increase of about 60%. OHSU is expanding general radiology services at HMC as part of its Community Division and is adding radiologists to match that growth. The group's goal is a team of 10 radiologists.

Practice Setting

The group practiced independently until 2020, when its radiologists became OHSU employees. Scheduling and hiring decisions are still made locally by the HMC group, and shift types are distributed equally across all radiologists.

The group describes its culture as collaborative, communicative, and low-drama. Several physicians who left the group have since returned.

Service Area

HMC draws patients from western Washington County and a wide surrounding region. West of Aloha, OHSU is the primary imaging provider.

  • Hillsboro, Forest Grove, Cornelius, and Beaverton
  • South to Salem
  • West to Newport and the north coast, including Seaside and Astoria
  • North to Scappoose, St. Helens, and Vernonia

Patients from coastal communities often travel to HMC for imaging their local hospitals don't offer. HMC's mobile mammography unit also serves patients across seven counties.

Your Role

This is a general diagnostic radiology position with light procedures. You'll read across modalities and take part in onsite coverage, procedures, and weekend call.

  • Read CT, ultrasound, and MRI, with mammography and PET/CT as part of the group's case mix
  • Perform light procedures, including CT- and ultrasound-guided drainages and biopsies, arthrograms and joint injections, and breast biopsies
  • Refer specialized interventional procedures to a separate IR service
  • Send more specialized studies to subspecialty-trained members of the group

The group adjusts assignments around each radiologist's training. If you have fellowship training, you can take on a larger share of work in your subspecialty while covering general reads. Not every radiologist reads mammography, and specific read and procedure preferences are discussed with the group during your interview.

This is a clinical role. There are no administrative, teaching, or research requirements.

Qualifications

Required

  • Completion of an ACGME-accredited Diagnostic Radiology residency
  • ABR board certified or board eligible
  • Eligible for an Oregon medical license
  • Experience reading CT, ultrasound, and MRI
  • Comfort with light general radiology procedures
  • Residence within commuting distance of Hillsboro for onsite shifts, procedures, and call

Preferred

  • Experience reading mammography (MQSA qualification is not required)
  • Experience reading PET/CT
  • Fellowship training in neuroradiology or musculoskeletal imaging

Residents and fellows currently in training are encouraged to apply. International medical graduates are encouraged to apply if they hold valid ECFMG certification and are ABR board certified or board eligible through the ABR IMG Alternate Pathway.

Schedule

The group builds the schedule in six-month blocks, so you'll know your workdays, call weekends, and days off months in advance. Vacation requests are scheduled first. Mondays and Fridays off are spread evenly across the group so everyone gets long weekends.

Most weeks are three or four days. Some weeks are shorter, since vacation days not used during a six-month block are spread out as additional days off.

Coverage Structure
Weekday Onsite Two radiologists onsite Monday through Friday: one covering the hospital and procedures, one covering mammography and other reads
Weekday Remote All other weekday shifts are read from home
Weekday Hours 8 am to 4:30 pm; patients are not normally scheduled after 3 pm
Weekend Call 8 am to 6 pm Saturday and Sunday, worked from home
Overnight Teleradiology service, 6 pm to 8 am

  • Onsite days average about two per week over a six-month block
  • OHSU provides a full home workstation that matches the onsite setup
  • You can trade shifts with colleagues and pick up additional shifts for extra pay
  • Schedule and call are prorated by FTE

Call

  • About 7 weekends per year at 1.0 FTE
  • Worked from home, with priority on ED and inpatient reads
  • Weekend call counts toward your annual schedule
  • Coming into the hospital during call is rare
  • Starting December 2026, the overnight teleradiology service moves to final reads, so the group no longer overreads overnight studies the next morning
