Education

Empowering Minds: Education and Schools in Our Community

Education options in the Baltimore metro range widely. Howard County and the suburban Baltimore County school districts are among the strongest in the country. Baltimore City Public Schools have mixed performance overall but include several nationally recognized magnet and exam schools. The metro also has one of the country’s deepest concentrations of independent and parochial schools, plus a strong network of higher education institutions.

Family Decision Patterns

Physician families relocating to Baltimore generally evaluate education first because school district selection often drives the housing decision. Common patterns include:

  • Choosing Howard County for top-ranked public schools, with the trade-off of a 30 to 40 minute commute to Union Memorial
  • Choosing inner Baltimore County (Towson, Ruxton, Lutherville-Timonium, Catonsville) for strong public schools and a 15 to 25 minute commute
  • Choosing Roland Park, Guilford, Homeland, or Mount Washington in the city with the option to use Roland Park Elementary/Middle and then select a private high school
  • Choosing one of the independent schools regardless of geography, with the trade-off of tuition costs ranging from approximately $25,000 to $45,000 per year for full pay families
