Understanding the Role
Good Shepherd Orthopedics is recruiting a general orthopedic surgeon to join its growing team in Hermiston, Oregon. This is the premier orthopedic services provider in Eastern Oregon, and the group is building toward an Orthopedic Center of Excellence anchored by a newly acquired 20-room clinic located directly across the street from the hospital.
The position fits a surgeon who wants a highly efficient practice in a well-resourced, technology-forward clinic. Surgeons with additional training in hand or foot and ankle surgery will find extra volume available immediately.
Practice Snapshot
- Setting: Hospital-employed, part of a growing regional health system
- Specialty: General Orthopedics with a strong volume of joint replacement and sports medicine
- Schedule: 4 ten-hour days, split between OR and clinic
- Call: 1:4 general call
- EMR: Epic
- Technology: Stryker Mako robotic-arm assisted joint replacement
The Role
- General orthopedics with a high volume of major joints and sports medicine
- Significant unmet needs in hand surgery or foot & ankle
- Two to three days in the OR and with the remainder of time spent in clinic
- Dedicated orthopedic OR block time Monday through Friday
- Mako robot room available each day
- Extra volume available for surgeons who also perform hand or foot and ankle surgery
- Spine cases are referred to OHSU; the role involves no spine surgery
- Very little trauma; serious trauma is transferred to higher-level centers
Service Area
Good Shepherd is the largest healthcare provider in Umatilla County. The practice draws from across the county and surrounding rural communities to the west and south. Hermiston sits on the southern shore of the Columbia River, about 30 minutes south of the Tri-Cities.
Growth and Leadership
- The practice is expanding, with the hospital proactively adding OR staff to meet rising block-time demand from the physicians
- The model is built to run two surgical teams per day, an early team and a late team

- Active physician assistant recruitment is underway to add APP support in the clinic and as first assist in the operating room
