Deliver High-Impact Gastroenterology Care in a Cutting-Edge Academic Setting
As a faculty gastroenterologist at UCI, your clinical practice will center around delivering comprehensive, patient-focused care at one of the most advanced academic medical environments in the nation. Your daily experience will include a mix of outpatient clinics and procedures, supported by a team that values efficiency, innovation, and physician wellness.
You will care for a diverse patient population across Orange County, with access to the latest diagnostic and therapeutic tools at the newly opening UCI Health – Irvine campus. Whether your focus is General GI, IBD, or Hepatology, your clinical contributions will be complemented by protected academic time and an environment that fosters excellence in teaching and research.
- Clinic schedule: Up to 4 half-day blocks per week, with 10–12 patients per session; new patients receive 40-minute visits and return patients 20 minutes
- Endoscopy schedule: Up to 4 half-day blocks weekly, averaging 8 procedures per session
- Call schedule: Fellows take first call; attending call is 1:13—light and evenly distributed, promoting work-life balance
- Hepatology providers are not included in general call rotation
- Clinical sites: Options include the Orange or Irvine campus, as well as clinics in Newport or Tustin
- Faculty teaching environment: Fellows or residents will rotate with you during clinic sessions and assist with patient follow-up
- Clinical tools and resources: Access to advanced diagnostic and therapeutic modalities, including:
- Artificial intelligence (AI) colonoscopy
- Capsule endoscopy
- Confocal laser endomicroscopy (Cellvizio®)
- Elastography for liver fibrosis
- Endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR)
- Endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD)
- Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP)
- Endoscopic ultrasound/fine needle aspiration and biopsy (EUS-FNA, FNB)
- Esophageal pH monitoring (Bravo®)
- High-resolution esophageal manometry and pH/impedance (HREM)
- Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) and cryotherapy for Barrett’s esophagus
- EUS-guided liver biopsy and portal pressure gradient measurement
- EMR system: Epic, with remote access supporting efficient offsite charting and call response
- Integrated PAs: Support follow-up care and optimize throughput; three PAs currently on staff
- Academic time: Approximately 20%, protected and flexible—tailored to research, teaching, or leadership goals
- Opportunities: Engage in clinical trials and contribute to ongoing GI research
