Phoenix Children’s Hospital is seeking Pediatric Emergency Medicine (PEM) physicians to join one of the nation’s fastest-growing children’s health systems. This new position is part of an exciting expansion, offering a 100% PEM role with no required urgent care shifts—though optional moonlighting is available for those looking to supplement their income. Whether you prefer the fast-paced environment of a Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center or a more hands-on, lower-acuity setting at a satellite campus, this role provides the ideal balance of challenge, flexibility, and professional fulfillment.
As a PEM physician at Phoenix Children’s, you’ll benefit from exceptional APP support, flexible scheduling, and a strong teaching culture. Physicians can enjoy opportunities to mentor residents and medical students at the Main Campus, while those working at the Avondale Campus will experience greater autonomy and a broader scope of hands-on procedures. With continued hospital growth and new facilities opening, now is the perfect time to become part of this dynamic team.
Shifts are structured in eight-hour blocks at all campuses, with options from 6 AM - 2 PM, 2 PM - 10 PM, and 10 PM - 6 AM. Night shifts are given additional credit, counting as nine hours for every eight worked, providing a built-in benefit for nocturnists. Schedules are created quarterly, and physicians can submit up to 14 requests per quarter for specific days off (that don’t count as your PTO). The ability to swap shifts is a standout feature—unlike at many institutions, coverage requests are often resolved within hours, making it easy to maintain work-life balance.
Weekend requirements are kept reasonable, with physicians currently working six weekends per quarter, or approximately one out of every thirteen weekends. Those interested in moonlighting can pick up additional PEM or urgent care shifts, with compensation expected to increase in the near future.
Physicians will split their time between the Main Campus in Phoenix and the Avondale Campus in West Valley, allowing for exposure to both a high-acuity teaching environment and a more hands-on clinical setting. At the Main Campus, which serves as a Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center, physicians work alongside residents, medical students, and specialists across multiple disciplines. The Avondale Campus, in contrast, has no trainees, allowing PEM physicians to maintain procedural skills without competition from learners.
While new hires will initially split their time evenly between these two locations, physicians who prefer Avondale can eventually transition to working 100% at that site. There are no requirements to rotate at Arrowhead or Mercy Gilbert campuses, ensuring a predictable and manageable work schedule. But there is the option to do so.
Phoenix Children’s fosters an academic environment at its Main Campus, where PEM physicians play a critical role in training the next generation of pediatric emergency providers. Those who enjoy mentoring medical students and residents will find ample teaching opportunities, while those at satellite locations benefit from increased autonomy and procedural exposure.
In addition to teaching, physicians have opportunities for leadership and professional growth. The hospital values physician involvement in shaping department policies and workflow, offering pathways into committee work, mentorship programs, and administrative leadership roles.
PEM physicians at Phoenix Children’s benefit from a strong leadership team that provides guidance and support at every stage of their career. The department is overseen by Dr. Jon McGreevy, Division Chief, and Dr. Blake Bulloch, Chief Medical Officer. Each campus also has a dedicated Medical Director, ensuring smooth operations and localized leadership. At Avondale, physicians report to Dr. Christina Conrad, while the Main Campus is led by Dr. Cherisse Mecham, and Arrowhead by Dr. Lydia Rabon.
This newly created position reflects the hospital’s commitment to growth and innovation in pediatric emergency medicine. If you’re looking for a collaborative, well-supported, and flexible work environment, Phoenix Children’s is the ideal place to advance your career.
