Systemwide Growth & Access

Phoenix Children’s is redefining what regional pediatric access looks like:

• Three full-service pediatric hospitals: Main (Thomas Campus), Avondale, and Arrowhead
• 650+ inpatient beds systemwide by the end of 2024
• Multiple urgent care centers, ambulatory sites, and specialty clinics
• Over 1,200 employed and affiliated pediatric physicians
• 75+ pediatric subspecialties serving families across the Southwest

Flagship – Thomas Campus

At the heart of the system is the Thomas Campus, a 484-bed facility (expanding to 550+) that houses Arizona’s only Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center. With 90,000+ annual emergency visits, nine trauma bays, and 75 treatment rooms, it’s the largest pediatric ED in the state.

Physicians here work alongside rotating residents and medical students in a collegial academic setting supported by:

• A 23-bed inpatient psychiatry unit
• Advanced imaging and diagnostics
• Dedicated research institute with active faculty participation
• Comprehensive specialty services from surgery and oncology to critical care and cardiology

Avondale Campus – West Valley Expansion

Opened in 2023, Avondale Campus brings top-tier pediatric emergency care closer to home for West Valley families. With 40 treatment rooms and onsite lab/imaging, this 35,000-square-foot facility handles 50,000+ annual ED visits.

• Designed for efficient, community-based care
• Complex cases are seamlessly transferred to Thomas Campus
• No residents/fellows on-site—ideal for procedural, hands-on practice
• A $195M investment creating 400 new jobs in the community

Arrowhead Campus – Northwest Valley Access

Phoenix Children’s Arrowhead Campus opened in August 2024, expanding reach into Glendale and surrounding areas. This 175,000-square-foot hospital includes:

• 30-bed ED, projected to handle 72,000+ annual visits
• 6 operating rooms + 2 minor procedure rooms
• 24 inpatient beds (expandable to 48)
• 24/7 physician coverage in a high-acuity setting
• No required PEM rotation—but a model for future system growth

Mercy Gilbert Campus – East Valley Expansion

Opening in 2024, Mercy Gilbert Campus will embed a pediatric hospital within the existing Dignity Health infrastructure. With inpatient, emergency, and specialty pediatric care, it will serve the growing communities of Gilbert, Chandler, and Queen Creek.
