As Division Chief, you will lead a team of 12 abdominal imaging radiologists whose expertise spans the full spectrum of body imaging. This is the largest division within the UC Davis Department of Radiology and carries the strongest reputation among all radiology divisions in the system. Your colleagues include multiple full professors, associate professors, and rising faculty members, many holding leadership positions that extend their influence across the department and institution.
The division operates in growth mode, with plans to recruit 3-4 new faculty members over the next one to two years. You will play a central role in these recruitment efforts, shaping the team's composition and culture for years to come. Leadership has also identified specific needs including a new Head of Ultrasound and a new Head of Oncology Imaging, the latter representing a significant development opportunity given the untapped potential for collaboration with the oncology service line.
Ramit Lamba, MD serves as the current Division Chief and also holds the Director of CT position (5% protected time). He brings deep institutional knowledge and has managed the division's growth and operations. Simran Sekhon, MD serves as Associate Division Chief and Fellowship Program Director, overseeing the training of 3 abdominal imaging fellows and ensuring the division's educational mission remains strong.
Benjamin Carney, MD serves as Assistant Professor and Vice Chair of Quality and Safety for the department, tracking QI metrics and addressing concerns across all divisions including call coverage. Ghaneh Fananapazir, MD holds the Director of Residency Program position, managing the educational experience for 30 radiology residents.
The remaining faculty bring diverse expertise and career stages to the division. John McGahan, MD serves as Professor and Director of Ultrasound, performing OB ultrasound and handling kidney and thyroid biopsies. He is one of only two faculty members currently providing advanced obstetric ultrasound services. Sumayya Jawadi, MD holds the Associate Clinical Professor rank and serves as Director of GI/GU Fluoroscopy.
Michael Corwin, MD serves as Assistant Professor, Vice Chair of Clinical Research, and Director of Abdominal MRI, bringing research leadership to the division. Raymond Dougherty, MD is Professor and Chair Emeritus who returned to help address the critical need for OB ultrasound coverage alongside Dr. McGahan.
Additional faculty members include Michelle Hopstone, MD (Associate Clinical Professor), Michael Larson, MD (Assistant Professor), Sima Naderi, MD (Clinical Professor), and Shannon Navarro, MD (Associate Professor). Each contributes to the division's clinical coverage and educational mission.
The division supports a robust educational program with 3 abdominal imaging fellows who rotate through all aspects of body imaging. These fellows work alongside faculty during clinical shifts and participate in the division's teaching culture. You will oversee their training in partnership with Fellowship Program Director Dr. Sekhon.
The broader residency program includes 30 radiology residents who rotate through abdominal imaging as part of their comprehensive training. Residents provide overnight coverage from midnight to 8:00am and work alongside faculty during weekend call shifts. Your teaching interactions with residents and fellows are considered essential to the role, which is why fully remote work arrangements are not available.
Beyond abdominal imaging, the department maintains fellowship programs across multiple subspecialties: MSK (3 fellows), Breast Imaging (2 fellows), Cardiothoracic (1 fellow), Neuroradiology (1 fellow), Nuclear Medicine (1 fellow), and Pediatric (1 fellow).
UC Davis Health was recently named to Forbes' "America's Best Large Employers" list for 2025, ranking as the No. 1 hospital or health system in California and No. 19 nationally among employers with at least 5,000 employees. This recognition reflects the institutional culture and work environment you would join. The Department of Radiology specifically maintains a long track record of pioneering new imaging technologies, diagnostic methods, and treatment strategies.
You will inherit a division staffed by accomplished physicians who have built strong programs and reputations. Your role will be to unify their efforts, support their continued growth, and lead the team into its next chapter of expansion and collaboration.
