Understanding the Role

A Leadership Role at one of California's Top-Ranked Hospital Systems

As Division Chief of Abdominal Imaging at UC Davis Health, you will lead one of the most respected abdominal imaging divisions in the region from within a top-ranked California hospital system. This is a full-time faculty position at the Associate or Full Professor rank, with appointment in either the Professor of Clinical Radiology or Health Sciences Clinical Professor series based on your experience and credentials. You will assume responsibility for a 12-physician division that serves as the backbone of diagnostic imaging across a 33-county service area spanning 65,000 square miles.

Your days will balance clinical excellence with academic leadership. The position offers 50-70% clinical time, with the remaining protected time divided between academic pursuits (20-30% depending on your series track) and division leadership responsibilities (10%). Additional directorships are available for faculty seeking expanded administrative roles, each carrying its own protected time allocation.

  • Full-time faculty position at Associate Professor or Full Professor rank
  • Professor of Clinical Radiology series or Health Sciences Clinical Professor series, commensurate with experience
  • 50-70% clinical time with 20-30% academic protected time plus 10% for division chief duties

  • Division currently includes 12 faculty members and 3 fellows
  • Opportunity to shape the largest and most reputable radiology divisions in the UC Davis system

Strategic Leadership and Vision

Your role extends well beyond clinical practice. You will provide strategic vision for the division's future, mentor faculty and fellows, and guide the professional development of team members at every stage of their careers. The division is in active growth mode, with plans to recruit 3-4 new faculty members over the next one to two years. You will lead these recruitment efforts while also establishing new collaborative relationships, particularly with Oncology, where significant opportunities for development remain untapped.

  • Collaborate across departments to advance interdisciplinary patient care
  • Partner with the education lead to support fellows and residents
  • Participate in administrative decision-making, staffing, and resource allocation

Academic Expectations

Your academic responsibilities will vary based on your appointment series. In the Health Sciences Clinical Professor series, you will focus on patient care, public and university service, and teaching with opportunities for scholarly or creative work. In the Clinical "X" series, expectations include patient care, active research, teaching, and university service. Both tracks position you to contribute meaningfully to the academic mission while maintaining clinical excellence.

  • Health Sciences Clinical Professor series: patient care, teaching, service, and scholarly work
  • Clinical "X" series: patient care, research, teaching, and university service
  • Oversight of the division's education efforts supporting 3 abdominal fellows

The Ideal Candidate

UC Davis seeks a leader with academic radiology experience who can serve as a true presence within the organization. You should be a visionary thinker with strong collaborative instincts, someone who works effectively across divisions and departments. A strong commitment to the academic mission is essential, as is the ability to mentor junior faculty and demonstrate teaching excellence. The ideal candidate will have good professional contacts and aspirations to increase the division's national exposure.

  • Fellowship training in Body Imaging, Abdominal Radiology, or equivalent required
  • Proficiency in all aspects of abdominal imaging including MR, CT, ultrasound, and fluoroscopy
  • Leadership experience in academic radiology strongly preferred
  • Proficiency in abdominal interventional procedures preferred but not required
