St. Joseph's Medical Center is a not-for-profit, short-term acute care hospital founded in 1899 by Fr. William O'Connor and continuously operated in Stockton ever since. It is the largest hospital in the city and the largest private employer in San Joaquin County. Fully accredited by The Joint Commission and consistently ranked among the top hospitals in California and the nation, St. Joseph's operates as part of Dignity Health, a subsidiary of CommonSpirit Health, one of the largest nonprofit health systems in the United States. The hospital has invested nearly $250 million over the past three years in community benefits, expanded services, and facility improvements, and a new patient tower with additional ICU capacity, emergency department space, and new operating rooms is expected to come online around 2030.
