You will step into one of the most respected pediatric BMT programs in the country, assuming leadership of a Top 5 busiest bone marrow transplant program with a fully funded $2.5 million endowment backing your work.
This is not a program you need to build from scratch.
The outgoing Section Head, Dr. Roberta Adams, has spent years establishing a program with one of the lowest mortality rates in the nation.
Your role is to take the reins of this turn-key operation and expand its services and capabilities with institutional support that places no restrictions on resources.
Phoenix Children's Center for Cancer & Blood Disorders serves as the regional hub for pediatric hematology and oncology across a massive draw area.
Families travel from across Arizona, New Mexico, Nevada, and Southern Utah to access your expertise.
With approximately 350 new oncology patients diagnosed annually and more than 100 clinical trials currently in progress, you will practice at the forefront of pediatric cancer care.
The Phoenix metropolitan area, the 5th largest in the United States, contains an estimated 1 million pediatric patients in Maricopa County alone, ensuring a consistent and growing patient population for years to come.
You will report directly to Mario Otto, MD, PhD, Division Chief of Hematology/Oncology, who joined Phoenix Children's three years ago and has since doubled patient volume.
Dr. Otto understands the needs of physician leaders and has built a collaborative environment where your voice carries weight in shaping the program's direction.
Your contract reflects at least 20% protected time for administrative and program leadership duties.
Expect approximately two clinical days per week, with flexibility to reduce clinical time further if you secure funded research.
Even the Chief Medical Officer maintains one clinical day, reflecting the institution's commitment to keeping leaders connected to patient care without overwhelming clinical demands.
Phoenix Children's welcomes applications from clinically focused candidates as well as those with active bench-to-bedside research programs and track records of obtaining external funding.
The ideal candidate brings several years of experience in the clinical care of pediatric stem cell transplant patients combined with prior academic leadership experience.
You will inherit a team of five faculty physicians with approval to grow to six immediately.
The institutional expectation is to expand the Blood and Marrow Transplant team to six or seven Hematology/Oncology physicians under your leadership.
With one physician needed for every ten transplants annually and current volumes exceeding 50 transplants per year, this growth trajectory is both necessary and fully supported.
This position offers a rare combination: an established, high-performing program with the resources and institutional backing to grow even further.
You will lead a team that already performs at the highest level while having the freedom and funding to pursue the initiatives that matter most to you, whether that means expanding clinical services, advancing CAR T-cell therapy capabilities, or building a research program that shapes the future of pediatric transplant medicine.
