Your days will center on what drew you to oncology in the first place: building lasting relationships with patients and guiding them through their cancer journey. As the dedicated hematologist/oncologist at Highlands ARH Regional Medical Center in Prestonsburg, Kentucky, you will serve as the primary cancer care physician for a four-county region in Eastern Kentucky. This hospital-employed position places you within a COC-accredited cancer program backed by the resources of Appalachian Regional Healthcare, a 14-hospital system with deep roots in the region.
The need here is real and immediate. Floyd, Johnson, Martin, and Magoffin counties have limited access to subspecialty oncology care, and patients currently travel significant distances or rely on rotating coverage from physicians based at other ARH facilities. Eastern Kentucky faces elevated rates of lung and colorectal cancers tied to regional health patterns, and the community is eager for a physician who will become a familiar, trusted presence. You will not be building from scratch; the infrastructure exists, the patient volume is established, and the clinic is currently undergoing renovations to enhance the practice environment.
This position offers the professional autonomy of a community practice with none of the isolation. You will have direct access to system-wide tumor boards, a dedicated UK Markey Cancer Center nurse liaison for complex referrals, and colleagues across six ARH oncology locations who understand the unique challenges of practicing in this region. The clinic renovation currently underway signals the health system's commitment to growing oncology services at this location, and leadership is actively investing in the infrastructure and support you need to succeed.
