Meet the Team

Collaborative Surgical Partners

As you join Good Shepherd Health, you'll become part of a tightly-knit surgical team characterized by mutual respect, complementary skills, and a shared commitment to exceptional patient care. The three established general surgeons bring diverse backgrounds and special interests, creating a practice environment where collaboration and individual expertise are equally valued. Unlike large metropolitan departments where surgeons may rarely interact, this team functions as true colleagues who actively support one another through shared knowledge and coverage.

Your three surgical partners each bring unique strengths to the practice while maintaining comprehensive general surgery capabilities:

  • Ann Rust, MD, FACS – With dual residency training in both Family Practice and General Surgery from Creighton University, Dr. Rust brings a holistic perspective to surgical care with particular expertise in women's health and breast surgery, including breast cancer surgery, reduction procedures, and advanced diagnostics
  • Marques Johnson, MD – Board Certified by the American Board of Surgery with training from Main Medical Center in Portland, ME and Loma Linda University, Dr. Johnson has developed a special interest in colorectal and robotic surgical approaches
  • David Maccabee, MD, FACS – Fellowship-trained in Laparoscopic Surgery at Oregon Health & Sciences University, Dr. Maccabee brings expertise in minimally invasive procedures, robotics, and bariatric surgery, with impressive multi-state licensure reflecting his comprehensive training

Comprehensive Surgical Capabilities

The surgical team maintains capabilities across an impressive spectrum of general surgery, allowing for both breadth of practice and opportunities to focus on areas of particular interest. All three surgeons perform a wide range of procedures including:

  • Comprehensive endoscopic procedures including colonoscopy, gastroscopy, and advanced endoscopy
  • Full spectrum of laparoscopic surgeries from basic procedures to complex approaches
  • Traditional open surgeries across multiple body systems
  • Office-based minor procedures minimizing the need for operating room utilization
  • Management of diverse surgical conditions from common presentations to complex cases

Support Staff and Integrated Care

Your practice will be enhanced by dedicated support staff who facilitate efficient patient care and surgical workflow. The general surgery team benefits from:

  • Dedicated Physician Assistant specifically supporting the General Surgery department
  • Expanding APP presence to further enhance surgical specialty coverage
  • Experienced nursing staff in both clinic and operating room settings
  • Collaborative emergency department team for trauma and emergent surgical needs
  • Integrated diagnostic imaging department with advanced capabilities

Practice Culture and Stability

The surgical department at Good Shepherd Health demonstrates remarkable stability, with surgeons who have chosen to build their careers in this community. This longevity speaks to both professional satisfaction and quality of life. The culture emphasizes:

  • Genuine collegial relationships rather than competitive dynamics
  • Respect for individual practice preferences and special interests
  • Commitment to work-life balance through thoughtful scheduling and coverage
  • Collaborative approach to complex cases and ongoing learning
  • Professional autonomy balanced with team support

Joining this established team offers the rare opportunity to step into a well-functioning surgical practice while still having the space to develop your own practice style and areas of interest. The current surgeons look forward to welcoming a fourth colleague who shares their commitment to excellent patient care and community service while bringing new perspectives to the department.
